Medium Dog Sweater Blog

My favorite items to make are thing that my family and animals uses or wears.

I have been finding that my dog is wearing a sweater year around and this is so fun to make I have decided to make a sweater for each season. I live in the great pacific northwest and in recent years we use our AC a lot more in the summer and even fall months and its so comfortable for us, but my dog always seems to be cold.

This sweater is helpful on holidays that include fireworks. Like New Year’s Eve and 4th of July it makes her calm down and be able to sleep when there are loud noises.

Materials Needed:

5.5 mm crochet hook

#4 Medium weight yarn (I used this YARN)

Yarn needle

Scissors

This sweater comes out measuring 16 inches long, 16 inches around and 12 inches from tail (bottom of the sweater) to the leg holes.

Begin:

We will be starting at the bottom of the sweater, chain 39 and in the second chain from the hook make your first half double crochet, then make 37 half double crochet across, chain 1 and turn.

Row two and three make one half double crochet in each stitch across making a total of 38 half double crochet across, chain 1 and turn your work.

Row four make 2 half double crochet in the first stitch, half double crochet in the next 36 stitches, then 2 half double crochet in the last stitch, Chain 1 and turn your work.

Row five and six make one half double crochet in each stitch across, chain 1 and turn your work.

Other sizes available: XSmall, Small, and Large

Row seven make 2 half double crochet in the first stitch, then make one half double crochet in the next 38 stitches, then make 2 half double crochet in the last stitch, chain 1 and turn your work.

Row eight through fifteen make one half double crochet in each stitch across, chain 1 and turn your work.

After completing row fifteen lay the sweater flat and fold left side of the sweater to the middle and then fold the right side of the sweater to the middle, then attach by making a slip stitch in the first half double crochet, chain 1 and turn your work.

Row sixteen make one half double crochet in the first stitch then make one half double crochet in the next 41 stitches, slip stitch, chain 1 and turn your work.

Row seventeen to twenty-six make one half double crochet in each stitch around to make a total of 42 half double crochet. It is very important in making this part of the dog sweater to slip stitch and turn your work. If you do not turn your work your leg holes will not line up with the V opening at the bottom.

Leg Holes:

Row twenty-seven chain 1 and make one half double crochet in the next 3 stitches, chain 8 and skip 8 stitches. Make one half double crochet in the next 20 stitches, chain 8, skip 8 stitches, make one half double crochet in the last 3 stitches, slip stitch, chain 1 and turn your work.

Row twenty-eight through thirty make one half double crochet around in each of the 42 stitches, slip stitch, chain 1 and turn your work.

Row thirty-one (half double crochet two together, half double crochet in next 8 stitches) we will repeat for a total of three times, slip stitch and do NOT turn your work.

Make sure you are working on the “right side, outside, correct side”

Collar:

Row thirty-two chain 1 (half double crochet in the first stitch and front post double in the next) we will repeat around, slip stitch and do not turn your work, chain 1.

Row thirty-three through thirty-five make (half double crochet in first stitch, front post double crochet in the next) repeat around.

The only difference is we will be wrapping around the post made from previous row.

Row thirty-six make front post double crochet in each stitch around, slip stitch, chain 1 and fasten off.

Finishing touches:

Attach our yarn with a slip stitch to each leg hole and make one half double crochet around chain 1 and fasten off.

Attach yarn with slip stitch and make one single crochet in each stitch and make 2 single crochet in the two corners chain 1 and fasten off.

Too much writing to follow and rather have it in a PDF file?
