Large Dog Sweater Pattern Blog

I am so excited to share this large dog sweater pattern with you as a blog post!

I have a smaller than average Golden Retriever she is about 35 pounds and a similar size to an Border Collie or Australian Sheppard.

Our pets bring us so much joy I grew up with boxers however a Golden has always been my dream dog.

Her name is Holley and she is such a good listener, loveable and funny at just over a year old.

She has brought so much joy to our home.

This sweater provides warmth and comfort on the holidays that includes fireworks.

Depending on the time of the year you can make this cute!

Red and Green for Christmas, Pink and Red for Valentine’s Day, Green and White for St. Patrick’s Day and Red, White and Blue for 4th of July.

Here is my PDF pattern for my medium size sweater that measures 16 inches long and 16 inches around.

Starting at the bottom of your sweater:

Chain 51 and in the second chain from the hook make hdc. Then hdc in the next 49 stitches across. Chain 1 and turn your work.

Row two through five half double crochet in each of the 50 stitches. Chain 1 and turn your work.

For row six make 2 half double crochet in the first stitch. Then half double crochet in the next 48 stitches. And 2 half double crochet in the last stitch. Chain 1 and turn your work.

Row seven through nine make 1 half double crochet in all 52 stitches. Chain 1 and turn your work.

Row ten, make 2 half double crochet in the first stitch, hdc in the next 50 stitches, and 2 half double crochet in the last stitch. Chain 1 and turn your work.

Row eleven through sixteen make half double crochet in each of the 54 stitches. Chain 1 and turn your work.

Connecting to make tube:

Row seventeen make half double crochet in each of the 54 stitches, slip stitch to make tube. Chain 1 and turn your work.

Row eighteen through thirty-two make half double crochet in each of the 54 stitches.

Chain 1 and turn your work to ensure your leg holes line up with the V

Leg Holes:

Row thirty-three half double crochet in the next 4 stitches, chain 8, skip 8 stitches, half double crochet in next 30 stitches, chain 8, skip 8 stitches, half double crochet in the last 4 stitches. Chain 1 and turn your work.

Row thirty-four through thirty-seven make half double crochet in the next 54 stitches. Chain 1 and turn your work.

Row thirty-eight start by making a half double crochet two together. Half double crochet in the next 7 stitches repeat this a total of 5 times. Chain 1.

Making sure you are working on the outside of the sweater from this point on we will NOT turn our work anymore.

Collar:

Row thirty-nine through forty-nine we will make a half double crochet in the first stitch then a front post double crochet around the next. Along with chain 1 DO NOT turn your work.

To make front post double crochet insert your hook into next stitch then come back through making your crochet hook wrap around the post of the stitch, then hdc in next stitch (not around the post).

Last of all row fifty make front post double crochet around each stitch.

Chain 1 and Fasten off.

Finishing touches:

Connect with a slip stitch to any stitch around the leg holes and make a half double crochet in each stitch around and slip stitch. Chain 1 and fasten off.

Connect with a slip stitch to any stitch around the bottom and V opening of the sweater. Chain 1 and make a single crochet in each stitch around making 2 single crochets in each of the 2 corner stitches.

Slip stitch and chain 1, fasten off.
